On 9 April 2004, BRE Bank was notified by Commerzbank AG, its strategic shareholder and partner, that Commerzbank AG will recommend Mr Maciej Leśny as a candidate for a Member of the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank SA in the election at the forthcoming General Meeting of BRE Bank (21 April 2004). The representatives of Commerzbank on the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank will recommend the election of Mr Maciej Leśny as Chairman of the Supervisory Board by the Members of the Board. Mr Krzysztof Szwarc, the outgoing Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank, will not stand – as he has said that before – at the election of the Chairman.
“Mr Maciej Leśny is one of the most acknowledged figures in the Polish public life, and he has vast professional experience. In addition, as a long-time Member of the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank, Mr Leśny knows the Bank better than almost anyone else. I am proud to say that we have managed to convince him to take on this important function. We hope that the recommendation will be supported by the other shareholders and the Members of the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank where we will propose Mr Maciej Leśny as a candidate for the Chairman,” said Mr Nicholas Teller.
Mr Maciej Leśny served on the Supervisory Board of BRE Bank (as its Chairman and Member) in 1994–2001. Over the past three years, Mr Leśny was Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Infrastructure; he resigned from the latter position in early April 2004.
“The prospect of Mr Maciej Leśny’s renewed close co-operation with BRE Bank is very good news. I have always appreciated Mr Leśny’s extensive experience and professional expertise which he contributed during his earlier successful work with BRE Bank. I am positive that his nomination as Chairman of the Supervisory Board will strengthen the role of the Bank on the Polish financial services market,” said Mr Wojciech Kostrzewa, President of the Management Board of BRE Bank.
